Hong Kong diaspora group challenges Andy Burnham to deliver electoral reform

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

LONDON, 15 July 2026 — The Liberal Democrats Friends of Hong Kong, along with the Hong Kong diaspora in the UK, watched a democracy get dismantled before — not through bad politics, but by design. In Hong Kong, an already unfair voting system was hollowed out deliberately: a National Security Law, an electoral overhaul that vetted candidates for "loyalty" — the imposed definition of patriotism — and pro-democracy politicians prosecuted simply for trying to win a majority. The opposition wasn't out-argued. It was legislated out of existence.

Britain's politics is fragmenting under First Past the Post. A system built for two parties. It's no longer working. That's dangerous.

As the Hong Kong diaspora living in the UK, we know exactly what it costs to lose a functioning democracy — and we're not willing to watch this one fracture the same way.

Nicholas Chan, Campaign Lead for the Liberal Democrats Friends of Hong Kong, said: "Andy Burnham, will you fight with us to fix our broken political system now — before it's too late?"
